About the Study
The spread of infectious diseases is driven by the movement and mixing of horses. Recent outbreaks have impacted significantly on the equine industry and equine welfare.
The Digital Stable App will allow the researchers / the RVC to collect anonymous horse movement data consisting of GPS locations with time stamps which will be used to perform spatial and network analysis.
This will show how connected UK horses are with one another, facilitating the evaluation of the risk of infectious disease spread. By understanding these contact patterns, interventions can be made more targeted and strategic, improving the prevention and limitation of disease spread.
The aim of this project is to improve our understanding of equine infectious disease risks associated with the contact networks and spatio-temporal risk clusters created by competition and leisure horse movements within the UK. Understanding these networks and clusters will inform future disease surveillance programmes and outbreak responses.

The CED is the government database that holds the records of all equines in the UK. It is a legal requirement for all equines that live in the UK to be recorded on this database. The CED is managed by Equine Register on behalf of The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
